The Smashing Pumpkins is gearing up for their inaugural performance in Croatia as a headliner for the much-anticipated INmusic festival #16.
Originating from Chicago in 1988, the band, led by frontman and guitarist Billy Corgan, along with guitarist James Iha, bassist D’arcy Wretzky, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, became a pivotal force in defining the grunge sound of the 90s.
Their distinct fusion of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, heavy metal, shoegaze, and electronica solidified their place in music history.
Their debut album ‘Gish,’ produced by Butch Vig, thrust them into the forefront of the grunge movement. Subsequently, the release of ‘Siamese Dream’ in 1993, featuring hit singles such as ‘Today,’ ‘Cherub Rock,’ ‘Disarm,’ and ‘Rocket,’ garnered both commercial success and critical acclaim, cementing its status as one of the finest alternative rock albums ever produced.
Despite facing various lineup changes and turbulent periods, The Smashing Pumpkins bid farewell in 2000, with members embarking on individual projects. However, in 2005, spearheaded by Billy Corgan, the band reunited, leading to the release of five new studio albums. The return of James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin to the lineup in 2018 further solidified their comeback.
November 2022 marked the initial release of the first act of their highly anticipated three-part album ‘Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts,’ with the final act hitting the scene in May 2023. This ambitious project, comprising 33 individual songs, pays homage to the essence of their previous works, ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ (1995) and ‘Machina/The Machines of God’ (2000), showcasing the band’s unparalleled creative prowess.
The Smashing Pumpkins’ premiere in Croatia is scheduled for the 16th edition of the INmusic festival in June 2024. This three-day extravaganza, taking place on the Jarun Lake isles, has firmly established itself as Croatia’s largest independent international music festival.
